Description and Basic Information ::
|
The Shakespeare Theatre in Washington is one of the nation’s premier classical theaters. Each season the 451-seat theater presents five plays by Shakespeare, as well as other productions by classical playwrights. What makes this theater unique, however, is that it brings audiences to the forefront of classical theatre (European theater) in a style that’s distinctly American. The Shakespeare Theatre prides itself on undertaking grand, thought-provoking productions, never comprising artistic integrity due to economic restraints or other common difficulties suffered by most theaters. The productions here are no less than epic works produced on a grand scale, a major reason why the theater has won 41 Helen Hayes Awards in the last 15 years. In addition to producing the beloved works of Shakespeare, the theater also has illuminated classical texts by Euripides and Ben Jonson, as well as modern masterpieces by George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, Eugene O’Neill, Henrik Ibsen, and Tennessee Williams. The Shakespeare Theatre produces five mainstage shows in downtown Washington, and two weeks of free Shakespeare at The Shakespeare Theatre Free For All, held each summer in Rock Creek Park. |
