| Rock Creek Park is an immensely popular park among Washingtonians. Originally built in 1890 to defend the city during the Civil War, it is one of the largest forested urban parks in the United States, containing a wide variety of natural, historical, and recreational options to explore. For example, four forts used during the Civil War still remain standing on park grounds. Joining the historic with the present, well-maintained bicycle, hiking and equestrian trails run past the historical forts and other sites, such as Pierce Mill, a functional watermill, and the Old Stone House, the oldest house in Washington. There are also plenty of opportunities for picnicking, hiking, skating, horseback riding, tennis and golf. More information about trails and park events is available from the rangers at the Nature Center and Planetarium located at 5200 Glover Rd. NW. (202-426-6829). The pretty grounds are also home to a popular 18-hole public golf course (See Golf Section). Park admission is free. Open from dawn to dusk. |
