:: Description and Basic Information ::
Only five blocks from the White House, the National Geographic Society is a fantastic place to take budding scientists who need a break from the National Mall and political monuments. There are many interactive games and exhibits that children and adults would both enjoy. You can touch an active tornado, quiz yourself on touch-screen stations, or view some of the temporary exhibits.
The “Earth Station One” exhibit is worth the trip in itself. This interactive show presented in a 72-seat amphitheater simulates an orbital flight 23,000 miles above the earth. It’s a great break from walking the city and the show is entertaining. “Earth Station One” is built around an 11-foot globe that is suspended on a cushion of air.
